The Mahoning Valley in Ohio is fast-becoming the epicenter of electric vehicle development in the United States and leading the charge in this “Voltage Valley” is Lordstown Motors. Operating from a 6.2 million square foot former General Motors plant, Lordstown Motors is fast-tracking plans to produce the industry’s first fully-electric pickup truck – the Lordstown EnduranceTM.
With over 2.5 million pickups sold in the U.S. each year, there is immense consumer demand for an EV truck. Lordstown Motors will be the first OEM to meet this demand, with production of the fully electric Endurance beginning in late 2020. Uniquely, the Endurance is powered by four electric motors that are housed inside the truck’s wheel hubs. In addition to lowering the center of gravity and improving performance, the Endurance’s innovative drivetrain arrangement allowed unconventional design solutions. Since the vehicle no longer had to account for a traditional front-mounted engine, the Lordstown Endurance boasts something no other pickup truck in history has ever offered — a lockable front trunk.
Hydra Design Labs helped make history by collaborating with Lordstown Motors for the overall design of the Endurance, including interior and exterior of the vehicle – along with CAD design surfacing, scale modeling and full-size prototyping. The public’s first glimpse of the new all-wheel drive EV pickup in May 2020 were courtesy of renderings created by Hydra specifically to unveil the new vehicle’s design. A full-scale prototype of the Endurance built in collaboration with Hydra Design Labs will be officially introduced to the public in June 2020.
